Due to rising production costs it has become necessary to increase the cost of many of our photo books. However, the good news is that we are offering all photo books at 35% off until the 15th of March! The sale is in effect right now so if you have a book you've been working on or planning, make sure you take advantage of this deep discount while it lasts!

This sales email caused some confusion among some of my clients. A few understood it as though the 35% discount was being offered to them even though they bought the book from me. Now I have one persistant client who is demanding the 35% discount which if I grant it, they would be getting the photo book at the price I would pay.

I'm a little confused by this myself Daryl. If I buy a pie from a bakery and I know that the store where they buy their pie filling is having a 35% off sale, I don’t expect my pies to be 35% off also! If I was a particularly aggressive negotiator I might try to get the bakery to knock a few $ off the price because I know this particular batch of pies cost them less to make, but I would have no expectation that the finished product (which includes labor, business overhead, etc.) would be subject to the full discount of one of the ingredients.

How did your client(s) learn about the sale, and why do they feel that your books are affected by this? The posting says "we (Adoramapix) are offering a sale" and does not commit our customers to altering their prices accordingly.

As a photographer myself, I know that the final price for a product that I sell to a client (which includes time taking the photos, overhead for equipment/studio/etc. as well as post-processing time and layout/creation time) includes a lot of costs, of which the physical media is only a fractional (and rarely the most expensive) part.

Could you please clarify how your clients came to believe the discount was directed to them? If we can understand that, then perhaps we can re-phrase our announcements in the future in order to prevent such confusion.

Thanks,
AL
