Many of you already know me, but for those of you who don't, I handle all the social media for AdoramaPix. I am on Facebook and Twitter everyday, connecting with customers and potential customers, spreading the word about our sales and specials, talking about new features and in general promoting the lab all I can. You'll also see me at trade shows and special events all around the country. I'm also a photographer myself, here's a link to some of my work on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ingrid/sets/

If you see me around NYC or anywhere I might be working, please say hi!

I'm very new to the world of photography and SLRs, but I am loving it so far!  Plenty to learn about, and I'm excited there's a forum here for people to talk about these things.  I will definitely have lots of questions, and I'm always looking for tips on how to shoot subjects in different settings, and get better results overall.  Thanks Adorama!

Hi folks, I love photography and owned a couple 35mm SLRs but I'm bound by potential obsolescence. I want to buy a DSLR now but I know that the next one will be better. At some point I just have to get into the game. Looking at Nikon and Canon. Just gotta stop looking. Looking forward to being on this forum.

Hello there, I also love photography.  I own a couple of DSLR's, lenses (can never have enough), CLS lighting, etc.  My passion is photographing people, but I'm pushing myself to photograph anything, to hone my skills. I shoot Nikon, and because of the lens investment, I'll probably stay there.  (I'm sure many people have similar stories).  I'm anxious to get to know more people with similar interests!  Just bought a 70-200 Nikkor lense from Adorama.  Great lens!

Is it possible for Adorama Pix to have on line courses? I can't get to the city but if the course was affordable it would help us " poor " starving photographers. I have a 10D Canon SLR. I like it a lot but want to upgrade. The Forum is a great idea. I am joining the 1000 city Photo Walk tomorrow in Binghamton, did it last year as well , meet new people and share ideas ... a Scott Kelby adventure.

Hi. Glad to see this forum. I've used Adorama and AdoramaPix for a couple of years now. I'm also friends (online only) with Helen Oster -- she's always been very helpful and I'm sure she will monitor this forum as she does Digital Photography School's forums. What I don't see is how to post a photo with a comment. Getting my profile pic up was easy. But I just don't see anything to post other pics we might want to share.

Adorama killed my shutterbug account :-}, love the service, quality and the PRICES now if they would just offer drop shipping to my customers I could really bury my shutterbug account. Hi, I'm the sports photographer for my town (a small town in South Central NJ). Originally from Philadelphia, I picked up photography in the Air Force in the early 60's as a hobby. Now I'm teaching the business to my son & brother as my work with the township takes away more of my time from the business. http://dynamicspectrumphotography.com

Ditto, Linda Johnson. My son is in Phila. and my brother in South Jersey. If I could get them into some good online courses it would help me out an awful lot. Heck, I probably could use a few my self, lots of new stuff to learn what with digital editing software and all. Linda, how do you like that 10D? I'm looking for a second camera for my brother and one for my son. I'm shooting with a Canon 50D and 40D and my son has a 40D and nikon D60. My brother is using a Nikon D40. They are both looking to go all Cannon and I'd like an opinion on some of the Canon Cameras.

Sorry gentlemen, the forum software doesn't have a digest option to send you daily or weekly summaries - an omission I'm painfully aware of since I am subscribed to every forum! :) What I would recommend is that if you are familiar with RSS clients, that you use one of those to read the forums. I'll see about creating a help file explaining how to set this up. On Monday I will look into the possibility of having our web team integrate something into the site that people can opt into that compiles a digest and sends it out at intervals you can specify. That way you can unsubscribe from the forum notifications and receive them instead through our digest.

RSS client won't do any good for me. I don't use it and have no desire to use it. So I'm just going to send these through my spam filter. It's the only thing I know to do. Already today I've gotten more emails from the forum than I generally get in a 24-hour period.

I am happy to see a forum involving Adorama. I have really missed AdoraPro, since it went beneath the waves.

I started in photography when I was very young. I closed my studio in 1958, when I realized that I didn't play well with people. :D I'm back into it again, with several NIkon film cameras and a Nikon D40. My one concession to Canon is the SD750 which is always in my pocket.

The best place to see my work is in the galleries right here at www.adoramapix.com/rifler39

Today is Scott Kelby's all day , 24 hour around the world photowalk day. I will be joining a group for the early evening photo shoot in upstate NY. It is a great way to meet other " shooters" , discuss cameras and lighting modes etc. If there is one in your area , jump on it... If not got to Scott Kelby;s web page and check out the pictures.

Again, I am hoping to see Adorama start an affordable online Photography course or courses, critiques etc. I use to belong to a Ning, on line group but they are now charging for group memberships. Does anyone know of a free on line Photography Club or Group? Hurray for this forum. Happy shooting. Linda

Hi Mustafa. Photos can't be added to comments (except by forum moderators) but they can be added to articles. If you exit this post and go to the forum itself you can click on the add article button on the upper right

add_article.jpg

Once you're editing your post you'll then see a link in the lower left to attach a file. Just upload a jpg and anyone seeing the article will see links to your attached files. They can just click on them to view the photo(s).

I'll investigate if there's a way to enable the insertion of inline photos for non-moderators.

I am glad to see Adorama put this together! I am an amatuer who basically obsesses with everything I do, so once I upgraded from a P&S to a Canon T1i I started searching for tutorials and shooting out in the real world as well. I now own 4 lenses, only one L 70-200 F4. I prefer action photography, but I also have worked on some landscapes and sunsets. I have a lot to learn, but i'm having a blast so far, it seems like the more I learn, the more fun I have as the results get better!

I am an amateur who shoots for my own pleasure more than anything else.  I can't afford all the pizazz and travel for the exotic images that win acolades.  I love the craft and am happy with occassional successes.

Linda, great pic currently posted above of the red-haired woman in front of a brick wall, reading papers.  I'm a confirmed rule of thirds addict and wonder a the lack of its use by today's celebrated "pros" due to a glut of amazing cameras.  Also, lines, textures, repeated patterns and somewhat warm diffused lighting is great.

I have not seen a way to view galleries of other members.  Is that an option here?  Thanks for the work and opportunities here.

Al Escudero I didn't see a buttom to the "add articles" section on the "Forums" page.

Jim, if you really like action photography you'll want to invest in a camera with a high frames/second burst rate and a couple of fast lenses. I'm not sure what the FPS is on the T1i but you'll need at least 5/sec. to get consistantly good action shots. Also an f2.8 telephoto (preferably zoom) lens, especially if you do sports or theater. I use a Canon 50D (6.3 FPS) with a f2.8 70-200 Tele zoom lens and  a 40D (6.5 FPS) with a f2.8 17-55 WA zoom for my second camera most of the time ( http://dynamicspectrumphotography.com & http://gobigblu.com ), and my good friend (and mentor) who shoots for the newspapers uses a Nikon D3 (9 FPS) & a D300 (8 FPS) says I should be looking for a good used 1DmarkIII (10 FPS) if I want to make sure I get the shot infast action sports like basketball and soccer. I probably will since I plan to freelance a lot more this coming fall & winter season.

Hi from South Florida,

I just started my adventure into photography after 20 years in the video/film industry. With my Canon 5D Mark II I am looking to learn how to take great pics as well as great video with its amazing HD capabilities. There seems to be a larger learning curve than I expected, so I am very eager to soak in as much info as I can from all of you ~ In everything from: suggested Lenses, filters, camera settings etc.

I had two great opportunities to test my D5 in the field shooting ~ Gorillas in Rwanda Africa and an 11 day trip into Alaska. Some various Photos and videos are on my blog http://earthxplorer.posterous.com/ & website: http://earthxplorer.com/

If you "tweet" lease say "Hi" on Twiiter http://twitter.com/earthXplorer - @earthXplorer

Looking forward to this chance to meet and learn from the best!

Thank you!

Hi!  Very big newbie here.  I've had only point and shoot digital cameras (not including the 110 cameras I had as a kid!), currently with a Panasonic Lumix FZ18.  I have two kids in college, so buying a $500+ camera body and $1k lens is out of the question for a while.   I am very interested in two areas of picture-taking, both focused on trains/railroads, and hope to be able to use my Lumix and a tripod I have:

1) Lighting and composition for photos of HO-Scale Model Railroads, as I build my layout, so I might one day publish the photos.

2) Lighting and composition as well as "setup" for taking pixes of real trains (i.e. railfanning).

I've enjoyed my brief "membership' with Adorama and hope to get more involved, so I can learn some basic picture-taking skills, as I read your posts and watch the How-to Videos that Adorama posts...

Thanks & hope to make some new friends.

Hello everyone, I am also an amateur, but love photography and am looking forward to learning how to really get what I want out of it.  My gear is a Nikon D300 with appropriate accessories.  I focus my work primarily on wildlife/outdoor and plant photos, with a lot of macro or near macro work.  I just set up my SmugMug account a few weeks ago and would really appreciate feedback on structure, format, and images.

The content of my account is a little mixed up, I want to use it to host pics that I share on forums, and also for some pics that I think fits more into the art category where I just really lie the shot.  I'd like to find a way to separate these two to avoid numbing people's brains sorting through too many pics that don't fit what they are looking for, but for now, it is a work in progress.

I hope you enjoy the pics, Be Well, Jason

Mustafa Abdullah, thanks for your response. My T1i is 3.7 or so fps and it has worked well for me so far. I think since I try and time things for one frame, having maybe one before and after helps a bit at that speed, but of course it would be better. I think when I have gotten the money together I may go to a 7D, which does everything better (8 fps, ISO noise, etc) and lets me keep my lense collection intact. 17-85 is my all around, the 70-200 F2.8 was on my wish list, but for my skill level and cash flow seemed over the top, so I went with the F4L version. It has worked well shooting mostly ourdoors at this point. I also have the "mandatory nifty fifty"  50 1.8 and a 100 2.8 Macro. Really enjoying myself, even though working two jobs doesn't allow me the time i'd like to spend shooting, I still manage a couple of times a week.

Thanks again

Well I finally got to that jalbum site http://mattgoblue.jalbum.net/Thoose-Mercer-Cars it's prettygood but dosent offer enough storagespace even with the (paid) pro & power levels. When you shoot as muchhigh schoolssports as I do 1 gig of storage is just likehaving a 64Mb card in your camera

Anybody ever saw (or even heard of) a car called the Mercer?

Hi.  I'm a 60 year old beginner and lovin' it.  I enjoy macro, especially flowers, but I'm still learning.  And of course, I enjoy photographing my grandchildren!

Hello to all, glad to hear about the forum. My name is Terry and I started shooting in 2004 and got the bug. There's so much to learn and I look forward to absorbing all I can in this forum hopefully I can offer something as well. No pics to upload right now since it's late, maybe next time, but you can check out my gallery @ www.leavethecamera.com. Just click on my profile. Thanks!

I'm glad to be here.  My name is Tony.  I started photography as a hobby around March this year.  I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like to dedicate to improving.  But, at some point things will quiet down enough for me to get the experience I want.

Here is one of my favorites from Fort Pulaski in Georgia on a mini-vacation to Tybee Island: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/4574923147_ef0ab1002a_b.jpg

Hi there. I am also an amateur photographer that loves to be behind my lense. I would love to expand my skills and creativity to be pro, but that takes time and time is something that is very scarce for me right now. But, I am very glad to see this forum and to be a part of it from the beginning. Don't have a portfolio to post a link to. I think that is because I don't have enough confidence in my work to share it yet. My own worst critic. Anyway, very glad to be here and hopefully learn some things.

How do you add a picture for critique... also I am still looking for a free web site to sell photography.. I have checked out Jalbum , handsome pagery. any others where the photographer has control over the sale.

Maybe we could start a sub group where we can submit some of our work and learn from our mistakes or continue with what we are doing correctly. We can offer each other things we do to create certain moods etc. I have to be careful of my IOS because beyond 200 , my pictures can become grainy. UCK!

I really think Ingrid and the Adorama site is great for starting the forum.  Linda

Hi Linda, ISO 200, are you sure, even the bargin point & shoot cameras do better than that. A lot of cameras start at 200, what does yous start at?

As for selling I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements to make my galleries and uploading them to my website http://dynamicspectrumphotography.com . I took a look at Jalbum but they didn't offer enough space (10 gigs max) to meet my needs. Photoshop Elements is easy to use and all you have to know to put agallery on your website is the FTP info from your hosting service. If you don't have a website, I just got this e-mail from Adorama, it might help:

I also like the critique idea

morris friedman, Jul 29 10:02 am (EDT):

Hi, thank you very much for asking, we actually partnered a little while back with photoshelter.com, you can host your images there and choose to fulfill with us, you will get our great quality, service and price along with a beautiful web site which they will help you set up.

Thank you,
Morris

Hi Linda - there's a forum set up for that purpose here and the first post in the forum is instructions on how to share your photos.

Enjoy!

Hi Ingrid,

Love the color & lighting in your photograph. Very cool. As an official dinosaur, I'm gonna get with the program and start getting involved in your forum, and someday I may actually trip on a crack...and send a tweet.

Ingrid, what's a tweet?! Is it anything like stepping on a canary?

Peace & Love,

Joe DiMaggio

Greetings from Illinois!

A little about me: I am starting to get serious about my photography.  I just purchased a new Canon Digital Rebel T1i (to replace my Canon Digital Rebel 300D; I really wanted to move up from my 2003-era 6.3MP DLR to something that could outgun my new Sony DSC-H55 P&S).  With that, I have the EF-S 17-55 IS, as well as the 28-135 IS and 75-300 IS lenses from Canon.  In addition, I have a no-name 500mm f/8 mirror lens, and a Sigma 70-210 that is not currently working with my dSLR.  I also have my original 28-80 zoom that came with my 35mm Canon rebel 2000 (from seemingly a lifetime ago).  It was with that Rebel 35mm that I took my best and favorite picture, one that I entered into a local camera shop's contest and was fortunate enough to be selected as a winner.  My prize: a 20x30 enlargement, displayed in their shop for 6 months, then given to me to mount and frame.  It sit proudly in our living room, the B&W print a nice contrast/compliment to the blue of our wall color.  (Does it show, my pride in that shot?  lol)

Today I just placed my first-ever order from Adorama for a 5-in-1 reflector set and a Kenko 3-set extension tube package for close-ups.  (Can't exactly say macro, yet, as nothing I have will do true 1:1)  I was pointed to Adorama from the writings and videos by Bryan Peterson.  I have been reading everything of his I can get my hands on; his style of teaching and explaining has truly made some of this "Greek" that is photography understandable to me.  If I could afford his online classes, I would be in shooter-heaven.  :)

Currently, my styles seem to be gravitating towards landscapes, nature and macro/close-ups.  My long-term goal is to work up a portfolio and submit work to stock agencies to supplement my retirement when that time comes.  Hopefully I can learn how to ask people for model releases and not let shyness or fear of rejection get in my way.  And hopefully, I am not fooling myself in thinking I am good enough to shoot stock photos.  My friends tell me some of my work can be really good; too bad for me I am my harshest critic.

Hi Guys,

Anyone intrested in having Adorama doing collage prints please go to the "other products & services" and let them know.

"Mustafa. We have had some discussion about this internally. We have discussed the possibility of having a version of our Book Editing software that can be used to make single sheets as opposed to books. This would allow you to use the power and flexibility of PixPublisher to make single page layouts in any print size or as a canvas wrap. We would offer drag and drop pre-made layouts for most standard print packages as well as some templates for common needs such as invitation cards, save the date cards, collages, graduation announcements, birth announcements, shower announcements, etc.

You would of course have access to the entire library of stickers, and complete flexibility in layout and design. If this is of interest to any of you, please click on the Me too! button above. The number of people that would find this feature useful will have an impact on the priority we assign to it."

Having lived in Astoria, Queens, NYC for 8 years, a mecca for culture and diversity, as well as having spent the last 7 years traveling as often as possible, I am constantly inspired by my surroundings and try to show that in my photography.  I've recently culled my life down from a creatively dead 50+ hour work week laden with stress and antagonism to a calmer life conducive to invention.  I have studied and practiced photography for four years, this past year with much more intensity.  I am currently working on a few different projects that I post, in progress, on my photography blog, www.notmanhattan.wordpress.com.

My current project is Astoria: Block by Block.  Block by block observes Astoria, Queens through photos. It’s the expected and the exceptional, the average and the aberrant. It highlights details of the neighborhood and its people.
